Thanks to Ray's home Belgium Brew (in a 2 litter ginger ale bottle!) and the several bottles of Chimay, it was a great party! I think I woke up drunk.... Thanks to everyone who came and made the night memorable.

Alvin and the Chipmunks

Took the kids to see Alvin and the Chipmunks today. It was pretty good- the chipmunks were funny, the actors just ok. Mild tolit hummor and some slap stick violence, but over all not bad. It's nice to see so many family movies in the theater. We might go see Water Horse next. They played a trailer for Speed Racer! Wow did that look cool- very stylized. Can't wait to see it.

Robert Jordan, how could you do this to me?

I just found out that Robert Jordan died September 16h, 2007. Many of you may know if him from his popular "Wheel of Time'" series. He died before completing the 12th and final book of that series "A Memory of Light". While I thought it was very selfish of him to die before completing a series that many of us have been reading for 17 years and patienly waiting for him to complete, I was encouraged by reports that he had already written 1,500! pages of the final voulume and reportely left extensive notes and outlines to an army of writters to complete the book after his death. While alive he was insisting that all 1,500 pages be published as one book (which would require the publisher to invent a new binding processes!). Hopefully we will see something soon and can nominate it for book of the month. See you on the 29th!

I know we ended up NOT selecting it as one of our books, but I read it anyway and now it's being made into a movie. Both the book and movie are full of controversey! Here is a fox news article about it http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,305487,00.html

The name of the book is the golden compass, book one of His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Compass-Dark-Materials-Book/dp/0345413350

When are Atheists going to protest movies with religious ceremonies in them? Aren't they afraid their children will start believing in god if they see a church?

GBC November 29th 8:00 Poor Herbies Book: Tom Clancy: Every Man a Tiger

Our next GBC will be Thursday, November 29th , 8:00 at Poor Herbies. The book (Scott Colby's choice) is Tom Clancy's Every Man a Tiger: The Gulf War Air Campaign. Next month's book will be chosen by Chris Helck

In attendance last night: Scott M, Scott C, Chip, Chris, Paul

About this month's book:
http://www.amazon.com/Every-Man-Tiger-Campaign-Commanders/dp/0399144935
From Publishers Weekly
Clancy's second study in high command of the U.S. armed forces (after Into the Storm, written with Army general Fred Franks) focuses on Air Force general Chuck Horner, the fighter pilot who was overall air commander for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. This book is less about the Gulf War than about the making of a modern fighter general and the remaking of a modern air force. Horner was part of a new Air Force generation that rejected the Strategic Air Command model of "predictability, order and control" in favor of a holistic approach to air power and air command. A firm believer in central control of air assets, Horner also regarded traditional distinctions between "strategic" and "tactical" air as no longer relevant. What mattered was the appropriate situational use of air power in an integrated war plan. The main text demonstrates Horner's success in implementing his concepts over Iraq. Though the narrative offers no startling insights or revelations, the authors make the important contribution of presenting command friction as a natural consequence of interaction among senior officers with high intelligence and strong wills. The implication is clear: to succeed in an unpredictable international environment, America's armed forces will need tigers at their head. Tigers are dangerous. They challenge each other. They take issue with higher wisdom and higher authority. And, according to the authors, they can be replaced by safely neutered house cats only at the country's peril. 500,000 first printing; $500,000 ad/promo; BOMC main selection; author tour.

GBC September 20th 8:00 Poor Herbie's Book: Charle Wilson's War by George Crile

Hey everyone, I had a great time last night. Please be sure to see the "This Months Book" session and give me your feedback.

In this email:
  • Next Meeting
  • This Months Book
  • Last Meeting's Attendance
  • Decisions of 1st Meeting
  • Suggested Books

Next Meeting Thursday, September 20th at 8:00 at Poor Herbie's. Let me know if you are planning to attend.

This Months Book Charlie Wilson's War:...by George Crile . This will be interesting because the author died today (hopefully this isn't a pattern of us killing off authors we are interested in)! This is in replacement of the "book" we voted for. We assumed the movie "National Treasure" (and it's soon to premiere sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secretes") were based on books. Rumor is the original movie was a rip off of "The Da Vinci Code", but not an original book.

Last Meeting's Attendance
Scott, Scott, Jeff, Matt, Micheal, Paul, and Sandeep

Decisions of 1st Meeting We need to decide the following:
  1. Frequency of the book club's meetings: Monthly, 3rd Thursday of the month.
  2. Next Meetings Date: Thursday, September 20th 8:00
  3. Next Meetings Location: Poor Herbie's was choosen as our regular location.
  4. Genre or Anything Goes? It was decided to rotate genre, so no two months have the same type of book.
  5. What will be our first book? Still open...
Suggested Books
  1. NEW Charlie Wilson's War:...by George Crile
  2. NEW Foundation by Isaac Asimov
  3. NEW Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore
  4. NEW The Island of Sequined Love Nun by Christopher Moore
  5. NEW Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore
  6. His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman

GBC August 16h 8:00 Poor Herbies

Hey everyone,

I am finally getting around to starting my "Guy's book club". (RSVP appreciated!)

After sitting home month after month while my wife goes out with the girls to eat, drink (and sometimes discuss the book they read which typically involved some suppressed woman in either a 3rd world country or previous century) I decided it was time for the guys to have their night out too.

I propose we have an initial meeting at Poor Herbies on Thursday, August 16h at 8:00 P.M. This will give us a chance to drink some beers, hang out, and decide if we want to create this book club! Please be prepared to discuss the following:

  • Frequency of the book club's meetings (I suggest every other month)
  • Place to meet (I would be happy to host the first one if we decided to meet at people's houses, otherwise we can pick a new location)
  • Will the club have a genre? (I like science fiction/fantasy, but I'm also open to anything)
  • What will be our first book? ( I will probably toss out two books:
  1. His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman
  2. On Call in Hell: a Doctor's Iraq War Story by Cdr Richard Jadick. Hopefully everyone will have suggestions so we have a great list to choose from)

Let me know if you would like to join the club ( and can make the 16th).

Let me know if there is anyone else you would like to invite to join our club.

Let me know if you have any books you would like to suggest.

Thanks! I think this will be fun.

Scott Moore

P.S. No one in this club will be REQUIRED to drink beer at any time. (you are also not required to read the book if you are just in the club for the beer…)
